Hartings was followed by Dan Stimpson from ICBA Securities, who shared his perspective on the current state of rates and how the Federal Reserve’s eventual rate in- creases will affect the banking sector going forward. Our final keynote speaker was Troy Evans from The Evans Group. Troy shared his amazing story with attendees -- a teenager whose life spiraled out of control until he ended up on the inside of a penitentiary after committing a series of bank robberies. Faced with a long sentence, Troy used his time in prison to turn his life around, earn two degrees and finish his sentence early. He spoke of overcoming odds and becoming a contributor to the world and offered a unique, first-hand perspective to bankers. Having been a bank robber and interviewing over 300 bank robbers, Troy offered attendees a host of security measures banks can implement to make their institution less appealing to a robber. At the conclusion of Troy’s keynote, our Chairman John Caldwell presided over the awarding of both the Grand Prize and the Lansdowne Getaway. John asked Kim Belcher, with Yount, Hyde & Barbour to draw the winning name, and this year’s lucky Grand Prize Winner was Cal Spencer from Benchmark Community Bank in Kenbridge. John’s final act as Chairman was announcing that Michelle Fitch from Bank of McKenney had won the weekend getaway to Lansdowne Resort, where VACB will hold its 39th Annual Convention, October 2 – 4, 2016. John encouraged everyone to join Michelle and attend VACB’s 2016 Convention at Lansdowne Resort!
