11 w i n t e r | 2016 As dinner concluded, Mike Ewing passed the gavel to Alice Frazier, Executive Vice President and COO at Cardinal Bank in McLean, who became the 2017 Chair of VACB. Following another round of appreciation for our supportive Associate Member sponsors and acknowledgement of our leadership bankers in attendance, the focus turned to our two newly- created banking awards. For the first time, the Association selected a Rising Star and The Com- munity Banker of the Year. Jim Ghiglieri with SHAZAM, the sponsoring company of the Rising Star, assisted Chairman Ewing as Jonathan Com- er, of Blue Ridge Bank in Luray, was presented the inaugural Rising Star award. Howard Pisons, of the Community Bankers’ Bank, the sponsoring company of the Community Banker of the Year award, was on hand to assist when Rob Shuford, from Old Point National Bank in Hampton, was named Community Banker of the Year. A t Tuesday’s breakfast and advocacy briefing, guests heard an update from Congressman Robert Hurt and remarks from Congresswoman Barbara Comstock. The second Business Session began immediately following breakfast with ICBA Chairman Rebeca Romero Rainey. Rainey spoke to delegates on the state of community banking and brought them up to speed on the work ICBA is doing on behalf of all community banks across the country, most notably, an update on the lawsuit ICBA has filed against the credit unions. Rainey was followed by Nona Massen- gill fromWilliams Mullen and Kimberly Snyder with KBS Results. This duo took on the top 10 considerations a bank must consider for M&A preparedness. Our final session featured Khamla Vorasane from Travelers Insurance and Frank Grimm with the Olive Group who took on the subject of kidnapping and ransom. From insur- ance considerations, to case studies presented by Dr. Grimm, these two gave an all-encompassing session on this tough subject. At the conclusion of the morning’s program, outgoing Chairman Mike Ewing presided over the Grand Prize Drawing. Mike asked Dave Fra- zier and Kim Belcher of Yount, Hyde & Barbour, who had donated the prize, to draw the winning name. This year’s lucky Grand Prize Winner was Earl Curran from Benchmark Community Bank in Kenbridge. Mike’s final act as Chairman was encouraging current attendees to come to VACB’s 40th Annual Convention celebration next year at Kingsmill Resort, October 1-3, 2017, and to wish all a safe journey home.
