The CommunityBanker 6 Chairperson’s Message M E S S A G E No Time for Rest By Lyn Hayth VACB Chairman Bank of Botetourt I started this quarterly column in The Community Banker with a Winston Churchill quote. He had so many great ones and so many are still pertinent to situations we all face today. I emphasize this because we need every Virginia community banker to continue the push forward, along with your fellow community bankers across this great country, for regulatory and legislative relief, and maybe even a little more common sense in the exam environment. Our President, Steve Yeakel, and your association have been working very hard supporting the ICBA Plan for Prosperity. As I am writing this quarterly message, we are hopeful for passage of S 2155, the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act, sponsored by Senator Michael Crapo from Idaho (R). Please continue to engage with your legislators and I hope to see many of you at the ICBA Capital Summit on April 9-11 in Washington. While we continue to work towards regulatory relief, we need to mind the store. That is, today’s Community Bank requires a skilled work force that is up to date as to technology require- ments and bank training. A staff that can migrate the level of technology, compliance and risk management that is thrust upon us every day, yet add value in serving a diverse and every chang- ing needs of our customer base. This is a tall order, but I feel we are up to the challenge. So help your bank by helping your staff tap into the valuable VACB educational opportunities available this coming year, including the recently offered Performance University program as well as Banking Essentials program. We need your support in order to be able to offer these top-notch programs. As I commented in the last quarterly magazine, your success depends on a healthy community banking environment. Your community, your staff and your shareholders are dependent on your success. Let the VACB motto, “One Mission, Community Banking,” be part of your strategy. I look forward to seeing you throughout the course of the coming year. “Continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential.” Winston Churchill “This is no time for ease and comfort. It is time to dare and endure.” —Winston Churchill
