The CommunityBanker 16 F E A T U R E Getting to Know: VACB’s 2018 Rising Star – Carolyn Kline, Virginia Partners Bank Title: Chief Retail Operations Officer Education: I received my undergraduate from Mary Washington in Business Admin- istration and continued on with my alma mater to obtain my MBA with concentration in HR. What drew you to banking? When I was contemplating applying for my MBA, I knew continuing work as a manager at Chick-fil-A would be dif - ficult. Often, the hours I worked varied and my schedule could go as late as midnight which would make it difficult to attend night classes or schedule meetings for various group projects. I decided to make a career switch to banking where I would be able to continue working as I completed my education. Best Business Decision: I think the best business decision I personally ever made was switching from a large multi-billion-dollar bank to a small, local community bank. In many ways, I enjoyed work- ing at the larger bank, but I know I would never be able to grow or learn as much as I have at Virginia Partners Bank. What was the mistake you learned the most from? When I first became a manager at Chick-fil-a, I tried to take on everything myself. I quickly learned that the best managers know how to delegate effectively so that they don’t become worn down and work is done efficiently. I began fo - cusing instead on how I could train people to become better at their jobs. What was your first job after college? I began working at Chick-fil-a in high school and became a store manager after approximately 2 years. I worked throughout my years in college and stayed with Chick-fil-a until I graduated from my undergraduate before switching to banking. What goals and aspirations do you have? I have a few short-term goals that I would like to accom- plish within the next year or two: 1. I want to obtain an HR certification – SHRM-CP. 2. Pass my certification test in the accredited banking program I’m currently taking. 3. Join a local community board. In the long term, I want to continue my career path in the community banking and eventually attend Banker’s school. What is your greatest source of inspiration? My greatest inspiration has always been my father. He instilled in me (and still does) that working hard and keep- ing my priorities in life straight would always be the right path to follow. When not at work, how do you like to spend your time? I enjoy going hiking in the Shenandoah Mountains with my family and friends. I also enjoy volunteering with the Marine Corps Marathon throughout the year for their many race events.
